Malaysia shone brightest at the LEGOLAND® School Challenge 2025, as two local schools claimed the top prizes in the Primary and Secondary categories of Asia’s largest interschool LEGO® building competition, organised in partnership with Malaysia’s Ministry of Education.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, emerged as Primary Champion with their team LEGEND INSPIRE, while team Lucira from Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gopeng, Perak, was crowned Secondary Champion. In the inaugural Junior Category (ages 7–9), Singapore’s Treetop Builders from Queenstown Primary School emerged victorious.
The Primary champions, LEGEND INSPIRE from Sekolah Kebangsaan Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, spent more than a month perfecting their Switzerland-inspired build, often staying back after school to ensure it was completed on time. Team members Nurzaara En Asyrani Binti Balbir Shah aged 10; Nur Zalikha Qhaira Binti Noor Mohamad Ali aged 10; Muhammad Zahin Qushayyi Bin Noor Mohamad Ali aged 12; and Muhammad Shah El Arasy Bin Balbir Shah aged 12 shared that the most challenging part was constructing the cascading waterfall and sourcing the right LEGO pieces. “The Speed Build challenge was very tough, but because each of us had clear roles, we managed to finish on time,” they said, adding that they are especially excited as this will be their very first trip to Korea.
For secondary champions, Lucira from Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gopeng, Perak, the journey was one of persistence and teamwork. The all-16-year-old team comprised Syahirah Binti Abdul Rahman, Anis Al-Bakri Binti Mustafa Al-Bakri, Aaqilah Damia Binti Saifuddin, and Nur Damia’ Batrisyia Binti Shahril Rizam, spent two months working on their build, drawing on lessons from their previous attempt last year where they did not place. “As boarding school students, balancing the project with our academic commitments was our biggest challenge. Of course, there were arguments along the way, but this taught us communication and problem-solving skills,” the team explained. “We’ve been fans of LEGO since childhood, so winning this year – especially against experienced teams – feels completely unexpected. We’re beyond thrilled to be heading to Korea.”
Competition at a Regional Scale
Now in its fourth year, the Challenge attracted nearly 2,000 students from seven countries – Malaysia, India, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, and China – under the theme “Build Your Dream Destination”.
This year’s edition reached new heights with several milestones:
A first-ever Live Speed Build Finale, contributing 20% of their final score, where teams raced against the clock in front of an audience.
Expanded age categories, introducing the new Junior division.
Debut participation from Singapore and China as finalists.
The Philippines’ much-anticipated return, following their last finals appearance in 2023
Creations ranged from futuristic theme parks on Mars to eco-friendly island retreats, showcasing the imagination, creativity, and technical prowess of young builders. From nearly 500 entries, 15 outstanding school teams advanced to the grand finals across three age categories.
“We are thrilled to see the LEGOLAND School Challenge evolve into a truly regional platform. With finalists from four countries, this year’s edition is the most diverse yet. The Challenge not only grows in scale but also enriches the cultural and creative exchange among students,” said Cs Lim, Vice President of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. “This expansion underscores LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort commitment to positioning Johor as the home of a competition that unites young builders across Asia, where creativity, collaboration, and innovation meet.”
Anchored in LEGO’s DNA of learning through play, the Challenge provides students with an avenue to explore STEAM concepts, build confidence, and express creativity in ways that inspire peers and communities alike.
Unforgettable Prizes & Recognition
Prizes worth over RM200,000 were awarded, including LEGO® trophies, annual passes, exclusive LEGO® sets, and international trips. The Malaysian champions in the Primary and Secondary categories earned exclusive trips to Korea, while Junior winners won a dream adventure at LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort.
Finalists’ creations will be on display at MINILAND, LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort until December 2025, highlighting the creativity of Asia’s next generation.
